Eid – who specialized in environmental and federal tribal laws – in fact handled two of the clients enmeshed in Abramoff’s scams. He was appointed U.S. attorney for Colorado in 2007 after having been vetted by Monica Goodling, the notorious Karl Rove-directed political operative in the Justice Department who was at the center of the scandal over the politicization of the department in its selections of U.S. attorneys. And he was appointed over the explicit wishes of the state’s Republican Senator, Wayne Allard, who wanted the currently serving U.S. attorney, William Leone, to remain in the job.
